Did you know your body needs magnesium to metabolize vitamin D, melatonin, and serotonin? When you’re getting enough, your skin begins to produce its own natural sunscreen—melanin. That pigment that deepens your color, strengthens your sun resilience, and yes—protects you.

But what happens if you’re not quite there yet?

You stay flexible.

For those transition months when your skin still startles at sunshine, there are natural solutions. A number of oils offer SPF (sun protection factor) properties. And I blend them to create what I call Sun Dream—a nourishing, mineral-rich sun shield.

But first, a little background.

I used to call myself “the Beluga.” Pale, delicate, and blisters within 15 minutes of sunlight. Sunscreen? Every chemical version burned my skin. When I moved to Asia, I started supplementing melatonin—not realizing that it affected skin pigmentation too. When I learned more, I pivoted toward magnesium. Topically. Daily.

Over time, my skin learned how to adapt. It learned to thrive in the sun. I can now spend hours outdoors, doing sports, gardening, or just living—without burning. I don’t wear sunscreen. I don’t need to. And yes, my fair-skinned daughters are thriving too.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Magnesium nourishes your nervous system, but it also teaches your body how to build a relationship with the sun—safely, naturally, and over time.

And in order to achieve this, transdermal magnesium is key.
That means using magnesium chloride in the form of body butters, oils, and bath flakes consistently. A regular supply is essential. The most cost-effective route is magnesium oil—spray it once or twice daily from the neck down. For young children especially, I highly recommend our magnesium body butters and soothing bath soaks. Not only do they help the skin adapt to sunlight, they also support deeper sleep, reduce inflammation, and calm the whole system.

And if you want true sun resilience—melanin activation requires more than just magnesium.
You need light in your eyes. Literally. Avoid sunglasses during the first and last light of the day and let your retina receive the full spectrum of sunlight. That’s how your body knows what season it’s in—and how to respond accordingly.

From someone who was once scared of the sun…
